Hotel 1887: The New Opera House
The famed opera house “Lai Chun Yuen” of the 1910s and 1920s was built in 1887 and underwent many transformations over the years. During its heydays, it welcomed famous opera stars of China and Hong Kong. Patrons sat around small tables watching performances and very often indulged in vices as well. The Japanese occupation in Singapore left the building in a dilapidated state and had to be restored to accepted standards.
A complete internal overhaul has transformed this grand old lady into something special. The Lobby with its unusually high ceiling eludes vastness of space but the warmth of our team will ease you into comfort almost immediately.
